The weepholes are packed with sand. Does that actually matter?
It matters a great deal. Blocked weeps hold splash against the bottom plate instead of letting the wall drain, so wind-blown sand turns an ordinary February cell into a wet plate. Out here that is constant maintenance.
Six inches a year is a desert. Why would February still load a wall?
Because almost the whole year arrives in a few cells, and the covering has been baking since March. Gaps that were not there in November take the first storm. The playa then keeps what got in from drying. A high-desert climate does not stay sealed; it opens and then soaks all at once against a basin that has no outlet.
The aqueduct crosses the valley. Is a wet slab an aqueduct leak?
Usually not. The aqueduct is a neighbor in a lined channel. The common wetting is a playa and sheetflow on alluvium after February's 1.76 inches. A true aqueduct failure is a different emergency and a different stain. Start with the playa grade; do not assume the big pipe.
