Frequently asked questions

Why does the sump run constantly in May and barely at all in August?

Because the water reaching it is seasonal rather than continuous. Spring rain lands on ground that has just thawed and cannot absorb at depth, so it moves through the upper soil and into the trench beside the foundation, which is the loosest material around. By late summer the till has dried, the perched water is gone, and the same pump has almost nothing arriving.

The soil looks dry two feet down. Where is basement water coming from?

Usually from the trench rather than from the ground generally. When a basement is dug, the material put back around it is looser than the undisturbed till it replaced, so it accepts water the surrounding soil rejects. That makes a vertical column of permeable fill running from the surface straight down to the footing, and it fills long before the till around it does.

Where should sump water actually be discharged?

Far enough from the foundation that it cannot re-enter the backfill, which on this soil means well beyond the trench edge. Water released a few feet from the wall soaks into the same loose fill it was just pumped out of and comes back, so the pump cycles more than it should and the wall stays loaded. Extending the discharge is often the cheapest meaningful change.
