Why does the melt cause more trouble than a summer storm?
Because the ground cannot help. In spring the subsoil is still frozen, so infiltration is close to zero and everything runs across the surface toward the lowest point available. A summer storm of the same volume partly soaks away; a March melt does not.
How much does the lake really add?
Enough to change the season. Lake-effect bands deliver snowfall totals here that are well above what the region's precipitation figure implies, and it accumulates rather than melting between events. The spring release reflects several months of that, arriving together.
