Considerably. Filling made the land buildable without lowering where the groundwater sits, so basements dug into it stay close to that level. Fill also settles unevenly across a century, which is why some blocks have chronic problems and others nearby have almost none.
The fault is two floors up and my ceiling is wet. How?
The floor structure is continuous in a triple-decker, so water runs along joists and down pipe chases until it finds an opening. Where it emerges is often well away from where it started, which is why the source has to be traced before any repair is scoped.
There is no space around the building. What can be done?
The work moves upward and inward. With no side yard to dig, exterior drainage is usually off the table, so the levers become the roof, where the downspouts actually discharge, an interior perimeter drain, and mechanical dehumidification. Constrained access changes the method without changing what is achievable.
