The river looks low and the cellar is still wet. What is holding the water?
The reservoirs. Their shores keep October water up under these cellars regardless of what the Sudbury is doing, so a low river tells you very little. The level that matters here sits behind the dams, not in the channel you can see.
The wall was fine in the fall and cracked over the winter. Why?
The freeze worked on what October left behind. Water still in the joints expands when MetroWest drops below freezing, and the opening it makes is a little wider each spring. The autumn wetting and the winter crack are one event a few months apart.
Why is October harder on a basement than a bigger summer storm?
Freeze is next. October puts water in the till that is still there when the ground locks. Frost then widens joints around that moisture, and the spring thaw tests openings that were tighter in September. A summer storm here is followed by drying air; October is followed by freeze, which is why the water October left is still there in March.
