Because the fill is the path. Raceways under the north-bank blocks still carry Merrimack water, and the material they were packed with moves it about as well as the open channel did. Nothing at the surface will show you where it runs.
It is a triple-decker and the top floor reported nothing. Where does a leak show first?
Two floors down, usually. Water tracks inside the wall past the flat above before it stains anything anyone notices, so the first report comes from the bottom unit while the source is at the top. On this stock the finding is almost never in the room where it was called in.
The 1960s addition is the wet part, not the original house. Why?
It sits on mill-era river fill that is still settling. The addition went up on ground the original house was not, with no drain added, so it takes water the older structure never sees. Newer is not better sited here.
