Filled plant races. The finishing works ran channels under these streets, and covering them did not stop them carrying water, so the houses above wet from below with no plumbing involved at all.
The finishing plant is gone. Why is the race still in the crawlspace?
Filled is not removed. Those channels still carry when the Haw is up, and a crawlspace on the terrace is sitting over them. September remnants raise the river; the race raises the wood. The plant does not have to dye cloth for the hydrology to work.
A ranch on clay up the hill. Is the Haw in that crawlspace?
Not as river. Clay perches September rain and sends it under a house sited to be above the shops. The river is the outlet. The perch is the source, and looking at the Haw from that lot will miss the clay.
