Overbank flow is only one path. Combined sewers on these benches surcharge when June rain hits a system carrying groundwater, and a brick cellar takes the pipes with the creek behaving itself. The channel is the obvious event; the quieter one is the sewer.
Is a brick mill cellar a different assembly from a poured 1947 ranch?
Yes. Mill brick and rubble pass moisture and have no damp-proofing. The ranch is a poured wall against clay, often without tile. One wets through the material; the other wets at the joints and the uphill face. Same June storm, two scopes.
The creek is small and the cellars still flood every June. Why?
The sewer surcharges into them. Combined lines discharge toward the creek, and when it is full the lowest openings on the benches take the backup. The size of the creek matters less than the fact that the pipes share it.
