Frequently asked questions
The house is only a few years old. Why did October wet the slab edge?
Age does not stop this clay. Houston Black shrinks in summer and opens a gap at the plate; a 5.16 inch remnant then runs down that gap before the soil can swell shut. A 2012 tract pad is as exposed as an old one, sometimes more, because the backfill is disturbed clay. New is not a seal.
We are not on limestone. Why isn't this a Hill Country job?
Because the ground here is fat Blackland clay, not Edwards rock. October remnants on this prairie are a shrink-swell delivery at the slab edge, not an artesian spring run. Scoping it as limestone will chase joints that are not the opening. The remnant is shared with a lot of Texas; the clay is not.
The yard is flat on purpose. Why does water still sit at the brick?
Flat was for a swale that only works when the clay can take water. After a dry summer the surface is sealed, so a remnant sheets to the brick. A 2012 pad with veneer to grade then wicks. Regrading a real fall away from the plate beats waiting for the clay to open. The swale is a drawing. October is a sheet.
