Months of accumulation release over a short window onto ground frozen well below the surface, so none of it soaks in and all of it travels at or near the surface, collecting against foundations. It matters a great deal. A pile against a wall through the winter melts directly against the foundation rather than across open ground, concentrating a whole season of precipitation at one point. Where snow gets cleared to is one of the few genuinely controllable variables in a subarctic winter, and moving the pile away from the building is free.
What should be done before an extended absence in winter?
Drain the system or keep it reliably heated, and do not rely on a thermostat alone. A power interruption or a heating failure in a subarctic winter freezes a house quickly, and a split line releases at full pressure on the thaw with nobody there. Draining removes the risk entirely. Where the house must stay heated, a low-temperature alarm that alerts remotely is inexpensive against the alternative.
