That is the clay working. Through a long dry summer it shrinks and opens cracks that run deep, and the first storm disappears down them. Once the clay has taken on water it swells shut, and from then on the same ground sheds almost everything. It is why October behaves nothing like January here, and why testing drainage early in the season proves very little.

Winter creeks off these hills rise quickly because the catchments are short and steep and the ground is saturated by then.
