It is the space underground rather than the surface that changed. That is why the same yard behaves completely differently at two times of year with no work having been done to it.
What is actually worth doing before a season?
Clearing everything that carries water off the roof, checking that no bed or patio has been built up against the wall, and knowing the elevation of the floor relative to the ground. Beyond that, photographing the interior while it is dry, and having anything irreplaceable off the floor. Those cost nothing and they are what makes the difference afterward.
