On a slab from the 1950s or 1960s, there may be no leak to find. Slabs of that era were poured over sand with little or no vapor barrier, and on a peninsula the sand stays damp. Moisture moves up through the slab continuously and collects under whatever finish sits on it. A calcium chloride or relative humidity test in the slab will show it, and the fix is a vapor barrier under a new floor rather than a plumbing repair.
Why does water drain fast in one part of the yard and stand in another?
Because the limestone under the sand is not uniform. Where solution has opened the rock, water leaves quickly and locally; a few yards away it may sit on intact stone until it evaporates. That variability is normal here and is not by itself a sign of a sinkhole. It does mean drainage fixes have to be designed for the specific lot rather than copied from a neighbor.
How much of an old bungalow can be dried rather than replaced?
More than owners expect, if it is caught early. Block walls and framing generally dry well when a closed system is running within a day. What does not survive is a wood sill or bottom plate that has been wet repeatedly over years, which is common in this stock and usually only visible once flooring comes up. A contractor should meter the plates before promising that everything can be dried in place.
