The pond behind us has a control structure. Does that protect our lot?
It sets the level rather than protecting anything. A controlled outlet holds the pond within a range, and the groundwater in the ground around it follows that range, which is why lots nearest the water have the highest tables. During a large event the pond rises to its outlet capacity and the surrounding ground rises with it. Knowing your basement floor elevation relative to that control level is the useful number.
The sump runs and the water does not go down.
In late winter that is a frozen discharge line nearly every time. The pump pushes into a blocked pipe, the water returns to the pit, and the pump burns out while the basement stays exposed. Prevention is about the line rather than the pump: adequate slope so it drains fully between cycles, an outlet kept clear of snow and ice, and a freeze-relief fitting so a blocked line has an alternative path.

It may be a landlocked basin, which is common in this landscape. These have no outlet, so water leaves only by soaking into the ground or evaporating. A drain helps only if there is somewhere lower to take the water, and often there is not. Where that is the case, the practical approach is keeping the basin away from the building rather than trying to empty it.
