Our foundation was blasted into rock. What does that mean for drainage?
It means the hole your basement sits in has impermeable sides and bottom, and the backfill placed against the wall is more permeable than the rock around it. Water that gets into that backfill cannot drain down, so it fills the space and stands against the foundation. A footing drain that actually discharges somewhere is essential in that condition, and older houses here frequently do not have one that still works.
The pump runs and the pit stays full.
Check the outlet before the pump. A discharge line that has iced shut sends the water straight back to the pit, so the pump runs continuously against a closed pipe and fails while the basement stays exposed. The fix is in the line rather than the pump: enough fall to empty between cycles, an outlet kept clear of drifted snow, and a relief fitting that gives blocked water somewhere else to go.
Where should a discharge line actually end?
Far enough away that the water does not come back, and somewhere it can keep moving. A line ending a few feet from the foundation puts water straight back into the backfill the drain is emptying, so the pump cycles on the same water indefinitely. Ten feet is a common minimum and further is better, and on a rock lot the route to somewhere lower is usually the constraint worth solving properly.
