That is what a rock-cut channel does. A gorge has no floodplain to spread into, so the water goes up fast, moves through, and drops again rather than spreading out and lingering. Does it matter which branch the rain fell on?
It does for timing. The two branches drain different areas and reach the confluence on different schedules, so a storm over one produces a different local rise than the same storm over the other, and the worst case is rain over both. If you are close to the water, watching both rather than a single downstream number gives a more useful picture of what is coming.
