Frost is the usual cause on stone and early poured walls here. Water in the soil beside them freezes, expands and pushes, and the wall gives a little where it can without fully returning in the thaw. The ground is granite. Should that not keep things dry?
Granite holds a building up admirably and absorbs essentially nothing. Rain either sits on the surface or finds a seam and follows it, so rather than dispersing through soil it emerges somewhere downhill in a concentrated stream. A house on rock therefore meets more water at its foundation rather than less. Solid and dry are separate properties and here they diverge.
