Fast, professional mold removal

What a licensed remediation job actually involves, in the order it happens. Every step below is the contractor's work, not ours.

  1. Step 1: Assessment

A licensed assessor establishes whether there is growth, how far it extends, and where the moisture is coming from.

  2. Step 2: Containment

Barriers and negative air pressure go up first, so disturbing material does not move spores into clean rooms.

  3. Step 3: Removal

Porous material that cannot be cleaned comes out - drywall cut past the moisture line, insulation, carpet pad, cabinet bases.

  4. Step 4: Drying

Dehumidifiers and air movers bring the structure back to a dry standard, with readings logged from the material rather than the surface.

What drives moisture problems in Hampton

The Hampton area our local pros cover for mold removal takes in Buckroe Gardens, Buckroe Beach, and Bloxoms Corner. It occupies the north shore of Hampton Roads, a roadstead where Newmarket Creek and the Hampton River are tidal, so July storms drain into water that is already high.

Housing stock

Only 28.3 percent of the housing here went up after 1989; the median construction year is 1974. Wartime and postwar frame on crawlspaces and slabs, median 1974, on a peninsula of sand and fill between the roadstead and Back River, with Fox Hill and Buckroe sitting only a few feet above tide.

Climate and water risk

July alone accounts for 11.1 percent of the 47.83 inches this area sees in an average year, on 1991–2020 normals recorded 3.8 miles away at LANGLEY AFB. July's 5.33 inches often arrives as slow-moving cells on a peninsula whose outfalls are tidal. When the Roads are up, Newmarket Creek has nowhere to go, and crawlspaces along Buckroe and Phoebus sit in groundwater the tide is holding, not the rain.

Common moisture and mold problems in Hampton

  • Tidal Newmarket Creek and Hampton River drowning storm outfalls whenever the Roads are up
  • Buckroe and Fox Hill crawlspaces on sand a few feet above tide, wet on the tide's schedule
  • Langley-era wartime cottages poured on fill with the floor sitting on the sand, no break between pad and tide
  • A peninsula so low that Back River and the roadstead can set the same lot's water table from opposite sides

Frequently asked questions

This is not the swamp side of the Roads. Why is the water table still tidal?

Because the peninsula is sand and fill a few feet above the roadstead. Newmarket Creek and the Hampton River are tidal for most of their in-city length, so a high tide holds stormwater in the soil whether or not the Dismal Swamp is involved. Chesapeake's problem is peat. This one is a tide that will not let the outfall empty.

The house is in Fox Hill, not on the beach. Is Buckroe still relevant?

As surf, no. As elevation, yes. Fox Hill is the same low sand sheet, just inland of the bay. A crawlspace there shares the Back River table, and a July cell on a high tide wets it from below the same way a Buckroe cottage takes spray from above. Different entry, same water.

Wartime housing on fill. What did they leave out?

A break between the floor and the ground. Fill was placed, a slab or crawl was set on it, and the job moved on. There is often no capillary break and no drain, so the fill's water table is the floor's water table. Drying the surface does not change what the tide is doing underneath.
