It drains a very large share of the city and much of its catchment is developed, so it responds quickly and carries a great deal. Parts of it run through culverts and channelized reaches that are easy to overlook at street level. For a lot of addresses it is far more relevant than the river is.
The hills are to the west and the flat ground to the east.
That division is worth establishing for any address. The western hill neighborhoods have slope drainage arriving from above and no river exposure; the eastern bottom land has the opposite. They are different problems and advice for one does not transfer to the other.
