In winter that almost always means the discharge line is frozen. The pump runs, pushes water into a blocked pipe, and the water comes straight back to the pit. It is a specific and common local failure, and it damages the pump as well as the basement. Discharge lines need enough slope to drain fully between cycles, an outlet clear of snow, and ideally a freeze-relief fitting so a blocked line has somewhere else to go.

Deep enough that foundation footings are set well below normal grade, and deep enough to freeze buried lines that would be safe further south. It matters in two ways. Plumbing in an exterior wall or an unheated space is at genuine risk for months rather than during occasional cold snaps. And frozen ground cannot absorb water, so when the melt comes the entire snowpack arrives at the surface at once with nowhere to go but sideways.

It is a real advantage and it is not a guarantee. Drain tile only helps while the sump can discharge, so the pump, the power, and the outlet all have to work. In a spring melt the system may run continuously for days. A backup pump matters as much in newer stock as in old, and so does knowing where the discharge terminates, because a line that ends near the foundation returns the same water to the tile.
